Andreas Luthe:

chairman of the board

From Bundesliga goalkeeper to chairman of the board at a storied club — a path rarely taken in German professional football. Andreas Luthe, long-time keeper for VfL Bochum, FC Augsburg, Union Berlin and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, immersed himself in leadership, business psychology and organizational development well before hanging up his gloves. After ending his playing career in summer 2024, he took over as chairman of the board at VfL Bochum in June 2025.

Looking back, Luthe describes himself as a player who wanted to understand decisions: "It was never easy for me to just accept decisions without an explanation." That's where his current understanding of leadership comes from — people are different, so they need to be led differently. "Forcing one leadership style onto everyone is rarely a good idea."
